This is a blueberry-cherry powerhouse antioxidant smoothie and it is delicious. It’s summer and everyone should eat more blueberries and cherries, but not just because they are fresh and plentiful. Often referred to as a “superfood,” blueberries are low in calories and incredibly good for you, more than people truly realize. They are considered to be one of the highest antioxidant foods in the world. They are believed to combat aging (no, really), boost brain function, fight cancer, promote heart heath, and aid in weight loss, due to their low-calorie, low glycemic load and high fiber content. Blueberries also work great in smoothies. But don’t stop there. Like blueberries, cherries are also little powerhouses. Similar to blueberries, cherries contain powerful antioxidants, have cancer-preventative compounds, reduce inflammation, support healthy sleep, promote heart health, ease exercise-induced muscle pain and help lower the risk of stroke. With just a touch of sweetness, this smoothie is a great option for adults and kids alike. It is also packed with protein, so it works great for a breakfast substitute or an afternoon snack alternative. If antioxidants are not what you’re looking for in your smoothie, checkout my favorite breakfast protein shake as another option.
